SoxAI
OpenRouter vs SoxAI · Updated September 2026

OpenRouter or SoxAI? Here's the honest answer.

OpenRouter popularized unified AI routing. SoxAI was built for teams that outgrew it — per-developer keys, real quota enforcement, self-host, and 200+ models. Here's where each wins.

TL;DR

Pick OpenRouter if you're a solo developer, want the broadest possible model list, and don't need team management or self-hosting.

Pick SoxAI if you have a team, need spending controls per developer, care about failover SLOs, or want the option to self-host.

Side-by-side, feature by feature

Grouped by what most teams actually care about. Every row is checked against public docs — if you spot something outdated, email [email protected] and we'll fix it.

Where OpenRouter wins

We're not going to pretend the comparison is one-sided. Here's where OpenRouter is the better pick.

Slightly broader model catalog

OpenRouter lists long-tail models that some teams explicitly want. SoxAI covers 200+ via official provider channels — plenty for most, but not everything.

Simpler if you work solo

If you're a lone developer with no team and no production SLO, OpenRouter's one-account-one-balance model is the faster path.

Larger existing community

OpenRouter has been around longer and has a busier forum. SoxAI's community is smaller but growing.

Migration takes two minutes

Both gateways are OpenAI-compatible. The switch is literally a URL and a key — no SDK changes, no rewrites.

migrate.py
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
-   api_key="sk-or-v1-...",
-   base_url="https://openrouter.ai/api/v1",
+   api_key="sk-soxai-...",        # from console.soxai.io
+   base_url="https://api.soxai.io/v1",
)

# Everything below this line stays exactly the same
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-4-6",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)

Same SDK, same request shape, same response shape. If you use Claude Code, Codex CLI, or any OpenAI-compatible tool, change two env vars and you're done.

Pricing: what you actually pay

Both charge per-token at provider list price.

OpenRouter
List price
  • Provider list price + markup
  • Credits expire per their policy
SoxAI
Provider list price
  • $0.50 trial credit on signup, no card
  • $5 bonus on first top-up ≥ $5

Frequently asked questions

Can I use SoxAI and OpenRouter at the same time?
Yes. Both are OpenAI-compatible, so you can point different services at different gateways. Some teams use SoxAI for production traffic and OpenRouter for exploratory model testing. SoxAI also supports BYOK — bring your OpenRouter key as a fallback channel.
Can I self-host SoxAI?
Yes. Customers who need data residency, air-gapped operation, or white-label deployment receive the full source under a commercial self-host license. The hosted gateway at console.soxai.io runs the same codebase. Email [email protected] to start a self-host conversation.
What happens if SoxAI goes down?
SoxAI itself has failover across upstream providers. For extra belt-and-suspenders, both OpenRouter and direct provider keys work as fallback base_urls in most SDKs. We recommend 1 primary + 1 fallback gateway for production, regardless of who you pick.
Does SoxAI log my prompts?
Request metadata (model, token count, latency, cost) is retained long-term for billing and analytics. Full request and response bodies are retained for 7 days to help debug production issues — after which they're auto-purged. Self-hosted deployments keep this data in your own database, so you control retention and access end-to-end.
